Sheinbaum: DEA Corruption Shows US Must Tackle Drug Demand at Home

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said recent corruption cases involving the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) show that Washington needs to take responsibility for its own role in the fight against drug trafficking, according to a report by La Jornada.
Speaking to reporters, Sheinbaum argued that the United States should focus on addressing drug consumption within its own borders instead of repeatedly pointing fingers at Mexico. Her comments come amid ongoing friction between the two countries over how to handle the cross-border narcotics trade.
The Mexican leader also confirmed that the US anti-drug czar is expected to make another visit to Mexico soon, as reported by Reforma. Sheinbaum noted that during a previous interaction, the US official showed interest in the "México Canta" competition, a detail reported by El Universal.
Aristegui Noticias quoted Sheinbaum as saying the US must combat drug trafficking on its own territory "and not just keep mentioning Mexico." El Heraldo de México also carried her warning that the United States has to address its domestic drug consumption problem.

The remarks follow a pattern of tension in US-Mexico relations, where Mexican officials have long argued that American demand for illegal drugs fuels the violence and corruption that plague their country. The DEA corruption cases Sheinbaum referenced appear to bolster her argument that the US side of the equation deserves closer scrutiny.
What to watch next: Whether the anticipated visit by the US anti-drug czar leads to any concrete policy shifts, or if the two governments remain stuck in a cycle of mutual recrimination.
